Where in the World Wide Web Can You Get More Visibility?

While everyone in the world and the cyber world is aware of the importance of getting your name out on Google, this doesn’t mean you should neglect other places that are crucial to making an appearance. Google may be the most widely used search engine, but it certainly isn’t the only one. This is especially true when you think of the fact that you are also looking for ways to show up on directories, directories that are localized and responsible for bringing you customers from your very own community.

Does that mean you should skip Google because the competition is fierce? Absolutely not. The bottom line is Google Places is free and therefore a sure thing for your marketing and promotional needs. In fact, you should still invest efforts into trying to get your business and name higher up in the ranks of search results here still. The trick is to not focus all your energy here and not to get too frustrated or discouraged if you just can’t move up the ranks.

Google Places – What’s All the Fuss About?

The first thing to do is make sure you make full use of the Google Places approach. You can use it for free, and there are tools you can utilize to make the most of your efforts. Google offers training videos and you can find tips for using any of the features that are part of the Google Places site. One of the benefits of using Google Places is that is has some advanced features other directory sites may not.

For instance you can track things such as how many users demonstrated interest or followed through by visiting your site directly from Google Places. If visitors actually use the map feature to find your physical location or use the driving directions feature, you will have direct feedback on whether or not your listing is working. So yes, Google Places has the whistles and bells other sites and directories may not, but it doesn’t mean you should neglect using others. In other words, don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

What Else Is There?

The good news is that there are plenty of other free directories to take advantage of aside from Google Places. Even if these lack some of the advanced features Google Places has, you never know which directory potential customers may use to find your business in your community. Yahoo! Local and Bing Local are other popular approaches to use, and both do get fair traffic too. Of course, if you have built a good standing with the Better Business Bureau, then having a profile on the BBB directory is important.

If you are in an area with travelers or have a business that should appeal to visitors in your area, then utilizing sites related to this are crucial. These days travelers rely heavily on Travelocity, TripAdvisor and Yelp to check out an area they are visiting or relocating to. Get on these directories and be certain to encourage your customers to write reviews. This type of action will also help bump you up in the search ranks.
