Someone says, and means, that they’ll keep you in mind for referrals in the future. Then the names never come. It’s easy to file that under disappointment, but that’s the wrong drawer. Nobody lied. The Tuesday where the introduction would have made sense just went by, full of somebody else’s fires.
A referral sounds like a name being passed along, a small favor, a handoff. What’s actually happening is that someone is attaching their reputation to your work and deciding whether that introduction makes them look better or worse. That’s a risk.
