Two years ago Costco raised its annual membership fee for the first time since 2017. It charged people more for the right to walk through the door. In May, the company told investors that 92.2% of its members in the U.S. and Canada renewed anyway. Most businesses spend their days chasing strangers. Costco built one of the largest retail operations on earth mostly by keeping the people it already had.

Harvard Business Review put the cost of winning a new customer at five to 25 times the cost of keeping one you already have, and the money still goes to the strangers, because growth feels like it should arrive as a new face.
