A time when people were proudly tossing around brand new terms like &#8220;World Wide Web\u201d, &#8220;IP Addresses\u201d, and \u201cWeb Browser\u201d like they had some secret handshake.&nbsp; <em>Fast forward to today, and it\u2019s all &#8220;Custom GPTs\u201d, \u201cAgentic\u201d, and \u201cGenerative AI.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;<br><br>Back then, business owners were divided\u2014some convinced it would never affect their industry, and others diving in headfirst with sky-high expectations and little understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some reading this won\u2019t remember the once \u2018crazy\u2019 story that went \u2018viral\u2019 in 2001 (was that even a term yet?) about a guy who vowed to live an entire year getting everything he needed delivered from the internet. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2001\/01\/dotcomguy-gone-and-forgotten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DotComGuy \u2013 Wired<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, it was a stunt. Today? That\u2019s Tuesday. DoorDash, Amazon, Instacart\u2014they&#8217;re regulars on our porches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So yeah &#8211; as an old guy &#8211; this feels very familiar. We\u2019re back in that same moment now, only this time, the wave is artificial intelligence, and it feels a lot faster.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So once again, leaders are trying to figure out how to ride it without getting crushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t our first digital rodeo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem isn&#8217;t recognizing that AI is important. Most business owners I speak with <em>get <\/em>it. Others are just comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Play #2: Start with a Smart Pilot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jumping headfirst into a full-scale AI overhaul? That\u2019s the Webvan approach\u2014and if you remember them, you know how that ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, pick a single, high-impact area. Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Predictive maintenance on your machines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quoting automation in your sales process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demand forecasting using historical data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual inspection or quality control using AI vision tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Start small. Measure carefully. Prove ROI. Automation is cool. But you know what\u2019s cooler? Profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure every AI initiative maps clearly to a business goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can we produce faster?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we reduce downtime?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we support our sales team better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can we eliminate waste?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t measure impact, it\u2019s just a shiny object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to Watch Out For<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Buy AI software just because your competitor did<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treat AI like an IT project (it\u2019s a leadership and cultural shift)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assume people will automatically adopt the change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use vanity metrics instead of real business KPIs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Align AI tools with actual pain points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bring your team along on the journey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set realistic timelines and expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn from past tech failures (remember Kozmo.com?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Monday Morning Moves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not sure where to start? Same here\u2014sort of. I don\u2019t have all the answers, and frankly, I don\u2019t think anyone truly does right now. We\u2019re all figuring this out together, one small step at a time. But here\u2019s what I\u2019ve been seeing from other business owners and what we\u2019re starting to explore inside our own company. Maybe these ideas will help you get moving as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These aren\u2019t hard rules but just a few simple, doable moves that can help you test the waters without diving in blind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify one legacy process that\u2019s slowing you down. It might be quoting, scheduling, or quality checks\u2026just pick one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask your team where they\u2019re already using AI tools on their own (they probably are). You might be surprised how much experimentation is already happening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brainstorm a small pilot project. Something low-risk, but high enough impact that you can actually learn from it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Define what success looks like in real business terms. Dollars saved, hours reclaimed, fewer errors\u2014whatever matters to <em>you<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set a 30-day goal and review progress weekly. Don\u2019t wait a year to evaluate. Start small, start fast, and keep it moving.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the same approach we\u2019re trying to take. Not perfect. Not polished. But pointed in the right direction and always learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mindset Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You don\u2019t need to be first. But don\u2019t be last.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture eats code for breakfast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect what works. Upgrade what doesn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This moment is about balance. You can embrace new tech <em>and<\/em> honor what made your business great.
